Bulk physical storage of renewable energy produced gases can act as a longer-term storage solution (hours, days, weeks, months) to help maintain flexibility in a fossil-free energy grid (The Danish Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells). Without the hydrogen scenario, the potential for hydrogen-based energy storage in Denmark will be limited.

Electric energy storage facilities, such as batteries, must comply with technical requirements to be connected to the distribution network. This is to ensure a high quality in the delivery of electricity to all customers.
Do energy storage facilities need a grid connection?
Facilities with electric energy storage (including hybrid facilities) must comply with the requirements set in Technical Regulation 3.3.1 issued by Energinet. Green Power Denmark has therefore developed a series of appendices for the grid connection of energy storage facilities to low-, medium-, and high-voltage networks based on TF 3.3.1.
Is the Danish guideline DK1 applicable for the Lib?
The Danish guideline DK1 is applicable for the LIB with capacities as described in section 1.6 (e.g. larger than 2000 kWh for BESS). Nevertheless, systems with lower capacities may also lead to fire and explosion hazards, hence the capacity limitations may be revised in the future.
How many kWh can a Bess enclosure hold?
The limit for the exterior wall is 20 kWh. It is recommended that the groups of 50 kWh should be spaced with distance of 0.9 m between each other. According to USA2, the space separation between BESS enclosures and adjacent buildings or critical site utilities or equipment are stated in the FM Global Data Sheet 1-20 .
Does Denmark have a standard for lithium-ion battery fire and explosion testing?
Denmark also lacks specific protocols for Lithium-ion battery fire and explosion testing, e.g., UL 9540A, which is a benchmark test recommended in many other countries. Danish guidelines may furthermore provide more clarification on when and which suppression systems should be installed, depending on BESS design parameters.
