What are the different types of energy storage policies?

Approximately 17 states have adopted some form of energy storage policies, which broadly fall into the following categories: procurement targets, regulatory adaption, demonstration programs, financial incentives, and consumer protections. Below we give an overview of each of these energy storage policy categories.

All of the states with a storage policy in place have a renewable portfolio standard or a nonbinding renewable energy goal. Regulatory changes can broaden competitive access to storage such as by updating resource planning requirements or permitting storage through rate proceedings.

What are outdoor storage regulations?

The purpose of these regulations is to provide adequate and convenient areas for outdoor storage and display of materials, merchandise, and equipment and for outdoor activities in residential, commercial, and industrial zones. The intent of these regulations is to minimize visual impacts to adjacent properties and public rights-of-way.

Why are energy storage resources important?

Energy storage resources have become an increasingly important component of the energy mix as traditional fossil fuel baseload energy resources transition to renewable energy sources. Currently 23 states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, have 100% clean energy goals in place.

Is residential energy storage outpacing expectations?

The rapid growth of residential energy storage is outpacing expectations. While larger batteries are also critical segments of the energy-storage market, household systems will likely become important assets sooner than many expect.

Is outdoor storage allowed?

Outdoor storage is subject to all applicable fire, health, safety, and building regulations. Outdoor storage is not permitted in required yard areas except that home maintenance or lawn maintenance equipment and nonmotorized recreational and leisure equipment are permitted in required side and rear yards.
